PRESS RELEASE – Awards Premio Galeno 2014
Milan, December 17th 2014
On December 17th the winners of the Galen Awards Italy have been announced during the ceremony held at Circolo della Stampa in Milan.
The award for drug innovation went to Novartis Vaccines Bexsero®
We would like to mention that this Award is intended only for those drugs or routes of drug administration and release profiles that have been available on the market for no longer than three years.
Bexsero® is the first multicomponent vaccine indicated for active immunization against serogroup B meningococcal, that causes high morbidity and mortality. Therefore the medical, scientific as well as social impact for the type of proposed vaccine is indeed remarkable.
The board also awarded a joint special commendation to the following drugs:
Sovaldi® Gilead
Kadcyla® Roche
Sovaldi®: it is the first hepatitis C virus NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase inhibitor, used in combination with other drugs to prevent the disease from progressing to more advanced stages.
Kadcyla®: the innovation of this drug consists of the combination of anti-HER2 antibody with a cytotoxic drug, for the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer, that improves the prognosis of patients with this type of cancer.
The second Award, that is intended for Research (performed in Italy in Clinical or Experimental Pharmacology by young researchers, max 40 years of age) was awarded to Dr.
Monica Giannotta, Istituto FIRC di Oncologia Molecolare (IFOM), Milano.
Monica Giannotta was awarded a contribution of 2,500 euro for the research she completed and she was presented with the congratulations of the board members.
5 additional researchers were awarded a joint special commendation and an award certificate.
